SMITHS EMPIRE WRIST WATCH - BRITISH MADE

Offered for sale is a Smiths, British made, mechanical Wrist Watch from the 1950s or 1960s, these watches were made at the Smiths/Ingersoll factory at Ystradgynlais near Swansea in South Wales - the factory closed in the early 1970s. The watch is in exceptionally nice condition having been serviced by the previous owner and fitted with a new textured leather arm band or strap; It winds and sets smoothly, runs nicely and keeps good time - it would make a fine timepiece to wear every day or an excellent addition to your collection of British watches. The only known fault is a damaged screw head on the pull-out piece and slight marking to the top plate in the vicinity. A repairers mark inside the case has been deliberately obliterated which may hide an interesting history. This minor fault is mentioned for completeness and does not affect the operation or appearance of the watch.

Smiths pin pallet movement, 29.3 mm dia. (13"')in nickel plated brass with five jewels and centre seconds - stamped "562".

Gilded (gold plated?) base metal case, 32 mm dia., with stainless steel snap-on back and 16 mm lugs.

Cream face with luminous hands and shaded gilt Arabic numerals, 28mm crystal and neat red pointer on seconds hand.

Mechanical watches make the ideal gift - classic appearance and no battery to fade or fail. They do, however, require cleaning and oiling from time to time by a competent watchmaker and although usually good timekeepers, a mechanical watch needs to be wound regularly and the time will occasionally need to be reset.
