ROTARY GOLD WRIST WATCH - DENNISON 'AQUATITE' CASECASE MADE IN ENGLAND WITH 1981 BIRMINGHAM HALLMARKSOffered for sale is a solidly made gentleman's mechanical Wrist Watch manufactured in Switzerland and Great Britain during 1981. This famous 'Rotary' company was first established in 1895 when Moise Dreyfuss opened his factory and offices in the Swiss town of La Chaux de Fonds. The 'Rotary' brand name was introduced in the early part of the 20th Century when the company decided to concentrate on the production of quality timepieces for the British market and the Dreyfuss family has maintained a presence in the United Kingdom since before the First World War. During the Second World War, the company became an official supplier of precision watches to the British Army. The case was made by one of the world's most respected watch case makers, a firm founded in Britain's second city in 1874 by the American watchmaking pioneer, Aaron Lufkin Dennison. Dennison died in 1895 but the company continued to prosper and, for over a century, the cases always carried his initials - A L D. ETA Calibre 2370, 11½"', 17 jewel, Incabloc movement with manual wind and set.
Dennison "Aquatite"
screw back case, 34mm dia., 9 Carat gold, serial number: 777464. Textured white face with raised gold Arabic numerals & batons, gold hands. The face is signed 'Rotary'. This watch is an excellent example of the high quality watchmaking. It winds and sets very smoothly (always a sure sign of a quality movement) and it keeps accurate time. Unusually, the watch has a centre sweep seconds hand with arrow tip in red and graduated chapter; features that were often demanded by the medical profession. The watch is supplied complete with a grained black leather arm band, fitted with a gilded buckle.
Mechanical watches make the ideal gift - classic appearance and no battery to fade or fail. They do, however, require attention from time to time by a competent watchmaker and although usually good timekeepers, a mechanical watch needs to be wound regularly and carefully. Timekeeping is unlikely to match the exact performance of modern quartz movements but, if properly looked after and regularly serviced, a mechanical watch will still be keeping good time long after its modern counterpart has ceased to function.
