HELVETIA WRIST WATCH - GERMAN MILITARY ISSUE

SECOND WORLD WAR - WEHRMACHT DIENST HEER

Offered for sale is a solidly made mechanical Wrist Watch manufactured in Switzerland by The General Watch Company for the German Military during the Second World War. The watches were issued to troops on active service and were manufactured to the most exacting specifications of the Wehrmacht. Unlike the contemporary timepieces used by the allied forces (which were also made in Switzerland) the Wehrmacht did not specify stainless steel cases, so in common with many contemporary watches made in Germany, this watch has a plated brass case with a screwed and waterproof stainless steel back.

Considering its age and provenance, this watch is in exceptionally good condition - much better than the photographs indicate. It winds and sets very smoothly - a sure sign of a quality movement - and keeps accurate time. The seconds hand, in the subsidiary dial above the six, stops when the watch is being set to allow accurate synchronization of watches.

Unsigned, 10½"', 15 Jewel, Incabloc movement with manual wind and set.

Chromed brass case, stainless steel screw back, 34 mm dia., serial number 4160 with fixed lugs. The case back is engraved with the Wehrmacht service numbers:  '3190 - D 12367 H'

Black dial face with luminous Arabic numerals and luminous hands. The face is signed 'Helvetia'.

The watch is supplied with a new German military style armband (made from imitation leather) which is of authentic appearance.

Mechanical watches make the ideal gift - classic appearance and no battery to fade or fail. They do, however, require attention from time to time by a competent watchmaker and although usually good timekeepers, a mechanical watch needs to be wound regularly and carefully. Timekeeping is unlikely to match the exact performance of modern quartz movements but, if properly looked after and regularly serviced, a mechanical watch will still be keeping good time long after its modern counterpart has ceased to function.

This watch from the dark days of the Second World War is a superb timepiece that will satisfy the most discerning military collector or WWII Reenactor.
