After delays due to weather and a protracted refurbishment of our engine room, we eventually managed to deliver Alnwick to Norton Canes Boatbuilders at Glascote Basin in November 2023 and work started as soon as the weather permitted. With the exception of the front cabin where we have chosen a dark grey instead of Red Oxide, the plan is to faithfully replicate the colours and lettering applied by R W Davis in 1998 - compare the image above with images from 1998 in our gallery. The image below shows Alnwick in the paint shop after having all exterior fittings removed and the upper works grit blasted back to bare metal.
During Winter, skilled marine engineers at Glascote Basin repaired the rudder (it had been twisted out of true after losing a long-forgotten fight with a concrete cill) and carried out other minor work in preparation for grit blasting. At the same time, the life-expired Electrolux (Dometic) three-way fridge was removed and a refurbished Epping stove was supplied for the back cabin. It is intended that a new 24 volt fridge will be procured and fitted during 2024. The team also polished the brass ports and nameplates ready for re-fitting. The image below shows the painting underway with dark green gloss applied to the back cabin sides.
When we visited the basin towards the end of April 2024, we were pleased to see the that much of the work including the signwriting had been completed to a very high standard - as can be seen from the images below and at the top of this page.
We have made plans to attend the Crick Boat Show at the end of May before returning to our home mooring at Cropredy Marina. If time permits, we plan to travel to Crick via Shardlow, Loughborough and Leicester, visiting the Great Central Railway and Welford (where Graham spent his childhood) en-route.
